Bringing two dogs together for the very first time can feel like a thrilling adventure—either they will be best friends or become instant rivals. If their first meeting isn't done under proper guidance, you might find yourself in a tense situation. Instead, lead them with confidence and set the stage for a peaceful first-time introduction. To begin the whole process, start by taking your dogs outdoors. Make the two dogs walk on opposite sides, moving in the same direction. Each time they look towards each other, reward them with a treat. Continue the process until they no longer remain focused on each other. In case the dogs are too fixated on one another, immediately increase the distance between them until they can walk without getting distracted. 

Moving on, allow the dogs to circle and sniff each other for a brief moment before pulling them apart. Keep repeating this process several times so they get well-acquainted with each other. Once you have successfully made the two dogs interact with each other, and their body language seems relaxed, try leaving them loose in a fenced area where they can move freely. The portal claims that it is important for each dog to have at least one person who would be responsible for handling them. Next, try and use a 4-6 foot nylon or leather leash that would help you have the most control over the canines. Additionally, carefully choose the area for making the dogs meet; a spacious and outdoor setup is generally preferred, as it allows a good enough distance between them. Moreover, keep their favorite treats to reward your four-legged babies.

But wait! There's more! The animal shelter dropped some pro tips for the pet parents to make their dogs' first meeting even more peaceful. They revealed that before making the canines meet indoors, they needed to meet outside in open areas. Second, keep the dogs on leashes so it's easier for you to handle them. Dogs are by nature a little possessive about their things, so make sure there are no toys or treats that make your resident dog feel the need to protect them from the other dog. If both dogs live in the same house, remember to supervise their interaction and take them for separate walks. However, even after taking care of all safety measures, if the dogs break into a fight, then separate them for a few days. Once their stress hormones get back to normal, try making them meet them again.
