Couple found their neighbor’s blind and deaf senior dog trapped in a freshly dug grave — but who it was meant for left them heartbroken

A couple got to the core of an unraveling mystery when they found a blind and deaf senior dog trapped in a grave ditch at night. At midnight, they heard strange noises but dismissed them as wildlife. By morning, they realized what was happening. In a viral Reddit post shared by the wife (u/Editor-Dizzy), she detailed the series of events that led them to the dog owner’s house to uncover a heartbreaking truth.

One night, the couple was watching TV in their home located in the central Virginia suburbs when the awful cries of a distressed canine animal distracted them. Their neighbors had two yappy dogs, but the strange noises were unlike how they sounded during the day. The neighborhood is surrounded by woods, and wild animals such as foxes, coyotes, and bears are common sights. “I suggested my husband go look, but he just insisted it was a fox. I looked outside but couldn’t see anything, and the noise stopped for 30 minutes or so,” the post read. They even consulted other neighbors for more information, but no one seemed to know.

Later that night, after her wife had gone to bed, she received a call from her husband asking for help. “Help. It’s a blind and deaf dog stuck in a grave-sized hole with an engraved tombstone next to it,” the husband said. When the noises restarted and sounded more “urgent,” the husband went over to check. The tombstone read, “Chrissy,” suggesting it was the dog’s name. Unfortunately, the couple could not recognize the dog from their neighborhood and rescued her. Back at home, they wrapped her up in towels and waited for her to fall asleep. The husband quickly posted on social media and informed the SPCA about the lost senior dog.

“She’s blind, deaf, senile, exhausted, and panicked. She refuses to drink. She paces constantly, stumbling and bumping into things,” the wife detailed. Early morning, the husband noticed people walking around the house near the grave from which they rescued the dog. “It is their dog, and it is a literal pet cemetery, and it is her grave,” the wife exclaimed. Apparently, the dog had gotten out of the house without their notice and “accidentally” trapped herself in her own grave, despite being blind and deaf. The owners also said that since "she stopped eating and drinking weeks ago" they thought she is not going to live longer. The couple refused to buy it and doubted how the owners could not hear the cries of their missing senior dog while they were inside their house watching TV, and still could not ignore it.

Then, the couple realized a shocking detail. As weird as it gets, the tombstone in the grave was not even the dog’s, whose name was Jody. Whereas, the rock mentioned the name of a pet named “Chrissy.” Turns out, it was the dog buried right beside Jody’s pre-dug grave, and her headstone had not arrived yet. “Not overreacting. This is shady. It sounds like they were hoping the dog would die overnight, and then when people started asking questions, they made up a story. Those people do not need that dog back,” warned u/FadedxEchos and u/Life_Dare578 said, “Don't give that dog back…there could be a case of animal abuse going on here.”
