Dog disregards newborn, rushes to check on the mother first — 'She just knew!'

When Brooke (@brookethomo on Instagram) came home after giving birth, she had anticipated her dog being worried about her, but little did the new mama know that the very moment would be so emotional. The beautiful video has over 24 million views since it was published on Brooke's Instagram page on May 17, 2025.

When Cedar, Brooke's soulmate dog, saw her enter the house with her newborn, she was just overtly delighted to meet her mommy after days. The dog went running towards Brooke, and after looking at the baby for just a moment, Cedar shifted her complete focus towards her mom, ensuring that she was alright! She first kept her head below Brooke's face, as if telling her how much she missed her. Next, Cedar gently kissed her mom's lips, like she was conveying how proud she was of Brooke's little achievement. Looking at her four-legged baby, the new mom could no longer hold back her tears as she let them flow uncontrollably. "She just KNEW," the woman wrote.

The way Cedar reacted on seeing Brooke says a lot about just how intelligent dogs are. Cedar could sense her mother's stress after childbirth, and that is perhaps why she hugged her, ensuring her that everything was going to be okay. In fact, backing this idea, National Public Radio (NPR), citing Scientific Reports, has claimed that dogs can actually smell a person's emotions and act accordingly. Another reason why Cedar just shifted her entire focus to her mother rather than being curious about the new baby was possibly because of separation anxiety. Cedar must have been stressed about not meeting Brooke for so long, so when she finally saw her, the dog didn't want to lose her again.
Meanwhile, reacting to Brooke's video, @taylorjanemorley commented, "This is how my Rosie was; everyone wanted to check in on my son, and she just wanted to check in on me." @divine_rachna shared, "She is more mature than so many humans. When a baby comes, people often forget what the mama went through. She is happy for the baby, but so glad she checked on you." Echoing the sentiments, @carlyschipper shared, "This is so beautiful! My dog is my soulmate too, and they are just the absolute best." @calypsoowhisperss confessed, "I don't want kids, but God, if I have any, let me be kind to them so they won't forget the way back home."

Similarly, @rumi_333 commented, "My cat was my protector. When I brought my baby home, he brought me a pigeon — the only way he knew how to show love. It was his kind gesture, his way of looking after us. He was an angel in the form of a cat, and I will always love him." @lawlietsjourney wrote, "The way she’s like, 'Oh, Mommy brought home a puppy! That’s neat. Okay, Mommy, are you okay?' That’s more important!" @teachershal confessed, "My heart can't handle this! The amount of love is so pure. Sweet babies!" On the other hand, @maraam_pasha commented, "The way she's asking if you are okay! I didn't realize communication could be so strong without words!"
