There’s never enough amazing encounters of a hero dog saving his human. In Stevens County, a 13-year-old rescue pup, Gita, was spotted sitting alone in the middle of a road, refusing to move even when a cop stopped to help. What followed took the officer deep into the forest and unfolded into a story no one expected.

In an official statement on Facebook, the Sheriff’s Office narrated the life-saving feat by Gita. Deputy Colton Wright spotted the dog sitting on the roadway while patrolling a rural wooded area in Stevens County, Washington. With no one in sight, he assumed the pup was lost. Pulling over, he tried to get Gita into his vehicle and find her owner. The dog resisted getting into his van. Wright initially looked for her owner in the surrounding woods within a mile. When he could not spot anyone, he returned to the dog only to find her lying on the centerline of the road.

Deputy Wright attempted to remove her from the road, but the dog rushed off into a trail in the woods. It was a clear indication for the officer to follow Gita, which he did. Eventually, they came across a small cabin in the forest where an elderly man was lying on the ground nearby. He was calling for help. “The 84-year-old male, who also had other medical conditions needing regular medications, had fallen and injured his leg,” the post stated.

The injured old man had been lying there for six and a half hours until help came. Fortunately, the man had Gita as his best friend, who helped save his life. “We credit Gita for saving his life that day. The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us,” the note added, thanking both the deputy and the pup for their bravery. Keith Johnson, Gita’s owner, later talked to KREM 2 about his misadventure. He had lost hope and thought he “might die out there.” Not on Gita’s watch.

As it turns out, Gita may have had a role to play in her owner’s accident, unintentionally, of course. On the morning of the accident, Johnson found his blood sugar level dropping below normal. He was about to get some juice from the fridge when Gita’s impatience urged him to let her out first. Gita ran out into the woods while the owner tried to match her pace. About 30 feet away from his cabin, Johnson decided to return but fell down and broke his hip. He called for help consistently but did not expect anyone to hear him so deep within the woods. However, Gita’s loyalty shone through as she sat beside him the whole time before bringing help. "She knew I needed help, and she knew what she needed to do to get it,” the owner noted.
