Dog’s strange habit of covering one power outlet with random objects puzzled his owner — until the hidden danger became clear

Dogs have unknown ways to protect their humans. When a pet owner found their dog fixated on a power outlet in their home, they thought he was doing it out of a bad habit. As days passed, the pet’s behavior became a cause for concern as he kept pawing at the socket and trying to cover it with random objects. The owner shared a Reddit post under u/ThinkPension2161 showing the dog’s antics with a spare blanket, asking the fellow users for their perspective. The post went viral with 17,000 votes, while a common advice kept popping up. It turns out the pet dog had saved the day with his questionable obsession.

“He keeps trying to cover this outlet,” the post was titled, showing the dog, Draco, making persistent efforts to cover the power socket. The 41-second clip showed Draco standing in the hallway with a red blanket, trying to hold it up to the outlet with his nose. It was apparent that he had some complaint with that particular socket. “I don't know what it is about this outlet in my house, specially,” the pet owner continued. “He keeps trying to cover it with whatever he can find. He doesn't do it with [sic] any other outlet in my house. I don't know what could cause that.”

It was no surprise that his efforts were futile, as the blanket was hardly adequate for the purpose Draco was aiming for. However, the owner filmed his antics while he impatiently tried to move the blanket up to the power socket. The comments flooded in with opinions, suggestions, and advice for the owner, most recommending an electrician. People guessed Draco’s behavior was a warning, and he may have saved the owner from a house fire. “I’d have an electrician look at that before you do anything else. He could save you from a house fire if there’s something wrong with it,” wrote u/PrincessRut0.

Likewise, u/According-Ad742 said, “Electricity does make sound that even some of us humans can hear. I would definitely go with the advice above. Turn it off, have someone look at it. There is something special going on.” The pet parent finally decided to get an electrician to see if something was wrong with the socket. Faulty wiring was discovered, which could have posed a serious risk in the future. "It's an old house, which makes sense,” the owner told Newsweek. The landlord took the initiative to cut it out of the home circuit. “The circuit went to three different rooms, so leaving that outlet dead was the easiest solution for now.”
In a follow-up post, the pet parent shared an update on Draco’s obsession. They explained that getting an electrician was a task for the week due to bad weather and flooding in the basement. After the outlet was cut off, Draco hadn’t batted an eye at it. “Draco, my dog, has since completely ignored the outlet altogether. The issue hasn't come up again at all,” the post stated. He was rewarded with treats and new toys for his heroic attempt.
