Family dog trapped in house fire refuses rescue from police officer as his ‘good boy’ instinct takes over

A house on fire was no serious reason for a pet dog to break the rules. Firefighters barged into a smoky home in Illinois to rescue a dog trapped in one of the rooms. As an officer declared his arrival, the Pit Bull named Oakley emerged from the shadows and escaped his grasp for something extraordinary. The officer followed Oakley in an attempt to rescue him from the house fire, but Mr. Good Boy had other plans. The pup led him to a particular corner before leaving the house, leaving the internet in hysterics.

In a viral footage released by CBS (@cbsnews) on TikTok, a police officer is seen kicking open the front door of a house. He alerted anyone inside the house that help was here, but there was no response. It was confirmed that the house was vacant except for a pet dog. “We’re doing a quick sweep to see if anybody’s home,” the officer could be heard informing his team. Soon, he was on a mission to find the dog and found him hiding in a room. The scared pup refused to be rescued and ran to the other end, leading the officer to his leash hanging on the wall.

The surprised officer complied with the dog’s insinuation and tied the leash before heading out. “You’re a good boy!” The rescue attempt was successful, and Oakley had no injuries. Earlier that day, the authorities were informed of a house fire in Aurora, Illinois, and rushed to the scene. Fortunately, there was no one inside the house besides the Pit Bull. Oakley is set to go down in the Good Boys Hall of Fame. The post was liked by 293,500 people. The comments transformed into a laughing fest as viewers chimed in with clever perspectives on Oakley’s good boy act.

“Wait, sir, we have rules in this house!” joked @user877752518619, and @virgotendencies1 noted, “Oh my God [sic] Thank God they searched. The dog was so quiet.” “A good boy even under life-threatening circumstances,” said @eddiepage7. However, a thoughtful comment by @lilly9rose shed light on an important issue regarding Pit Bulls. “Oakley is a Pit Bull, too. This dog knew it was in danger and didn’t react to the officer grabbing him before they got to the leash. No barks, nothing,” the note continued. “Yet people want to bash the breed. It’s not the breed, it’s the owners. Stand with Pits.”

According to ASPCA, dogs of many breeds can be selectively bred or trained to develop aggressive traits. Hence, Pit Bulls have been historically bred for their fighting ability, a dog trained to bite and hold bulls. A few other Pit Bulls were bred for work and companionship. Essentially, the dogs are popular family pets, admired for their gentle, affectionate, and loyal demeanor. Unfortunately, statistics tell a different story. A CDC study spanning over two decades found that Pit Bulls were responsible for 66% of dog-related fatalities, resulting in 346 American deaths, as reported by DogsBite.org.
