Her service dog gave an ‘urgent alert’ even though her diabetic son was still inside the school — moments later, mom realized her
As much as we admire dogs for their intelligence and awareness, stories of these canine companions never cease to amaze us. One such tale is of Ducky, a 2-year-old English Cocker Spaniel, who helped a mother (@typeonederfulwells) detect an impending danger to her son. While the dog and the mom were waiting for the child in her car, the pet's sudden behavior alerted her, an act that left her both grateful and amazed.
Ducky has been more than just a family pet to Aubrie Lewis; he is her son, Wells' diabetic alert dog. While her canine companion has been trained to alert when Wells’ blood sugar falls below 85 or rises above 175, Lewis couldn’t imagine the dog had far more astonishing skills. In October 2025, Aubrie arrived early with Ducky to pick up her son from preschool. She parked her car and watched the clock tick closer to the pick-up time. But what happened next stunned the mother of four.
Ducky, who was lying at the foot of the front passenger seat, suddenly began staring at Aubrie. Growing suspicious, she checked her son’s glucose readings on her phone, and what she saw left her speechless. Wells's blood sugar had slipped to 84. Calling it the "craziest" experience she had ever had, she recalled to PEOPLE, "As it was unfolding, I couldn’t even believe it was happening." The rest of the video shows Ducky restless, persistently nudging his owner, as they waited for the boy to come out of his school. The viral clip beautifully capture's the loyal dog's concern for his little owner.
In her TikTok post, Aubrie explained that Ducky was trained with saliva samples to detect her son's blood sugar fluctuations. "He smelled through the closed car windows, around the school building, while Wells was inside the building with probably 75 other kids and teachers," Aubrie shared. Her son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in November 2023, just a month and a half post his 3rd birthday.
Wells wears a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that tracks his blood sugar every five minutes. The readings are sent to his iPhone, as well as Lewis’ phone and his teacher’s, allowing them to monitor his levels while he’s at school. Yet, despite her son's medical condition, she is never afraid when her canine companion Ducky is around. Sharing a similar instance, Aubrie revealed that Ducky was able to miraculously detect his blood sugar level from their first floor while Wells was asleep upstairs with the door closed.
@typeonederfulwells Ducky has amazed me many, many times with his capabilities but this one absolutely takes the cake. The ability to pay enough attention to scents to recognize HIS boy’s low blood sugar, after not seeing him at all for 3 hours, and being this far away from him is incredible beyond what most people can understand. Ducky, you are one in a million buddy ❤️ #servicedog #servicedoglife #bloodsugar #t1d #type1diabetes ♬ growth - Gede Yudis
The service dog, who joined the family after being fully trained by the non-profit M.D, never fails to amaze the 31-year-old mother. "I trust him and his nose more than anything else," she said.
