Adopting a rescue dog is an extremely rewarding experience. Having said that, animals with an unknown past are often harder to take care of. Therefore, it's crucial to understand that it's a process and never a seamless transition. This is exactly what a family realized when they brought home their rescue dog. TikTok user Emi Ozem (@emiemiozmen) recently took to the platform to talk about their rescue dog, Mavis, from Freedom Angels Romania.

According to Newsweek, Mavis was found on the streets of  Romania "nearly dead" while trying to protect her babies. Once she was recused, the dog never made a noise and stayed silent throughout her time with Freedom Angels Romania and when she lived with a foster family. "We just expected her to be mute; that's what her rescuer said about her, and she's been mute in foster care," Emi said. "But, as soon as she settled in with us, she now won't keep quiet; she's so happy."

It's a well-known fact that rescue dogs need weeks sometimes even months to get accustomed to their new home. However, Mavis only took one short week before she realized that she was safe in her forever home. By day six, Emi said that the pup started to use her voice and the family quickly learned the truth. In yesterday's TikTok clip, Mavis joined one of her owners as he pretended to howl. The dog then happily echoed every time his owner howled. Later, when speaking with the publication, the owner said that now the dog talks back to them whenever they do. "As soon as we play and praise, she starts singing," he added.

People in the comment section talked about how cute the interaction was and shared their own stories. "We have a Romanian rescue too. The most loving dog we’ve ever had. He has his problems, poor thing," read one comment by @lovingyourwork. "I have a Romanian rescue too she was previously with a blind lady who passed she has been a challenge but she is the sweetest girl and I love her so much," added @maureen.fraser. "We have two Romanian rescue dogs. They are our world," added @sbredbin

The Romanian dog crisis is real in the country and there have been many initiatives to send these dogs to different countries so that they can lead a good life. The plight of the Romanian dogs has been the topic of discussion on many online forums. The country has an estimated 600,000 street dogs who live in really poor conditions, according to the Amelia Dog Trainer blog. The issue began during the communist era in the 1980s when people were ordered to relocate from their homes into apartment blocks; in the process, they were forced to abandon their pets. With thousands of un-neutered animals left to roam the streets, the population started to grow out of control. Over the years, the problem has only snowballed, with public pounds being paid by the government to take dogs off the street. Fortunately, many organisations are taking things into their own hands and as a result of the initiatives dogs like Mavis are finally getting to their forever homes to lead a happy and peaceful life.
