She quit her full-time job for a 1-day-old beaver. Now they've survived highs and lows together

Love happens the moment you realize that someone wants nothing but your safety. The soft, unspoken moment filled with unconditional love, trust, and compassion forms long-lasting bonds. Animals, too, experience similar emotions, especially those who, after a traumatizing past, finally get someone who makes them feel at home. Alexis Broz was fortunate enough to experience one such heartwarming bond—one that began the moment she rescued a newborn beaver.

It all began when Broz received a call from the wildlife emergency hotline, informing her about the 1-day-old baby beaver. When she first saw the baby beaver, she was just so surprised because this was the first time Broz had seen such a small beaver. "She was just perfect, but she was freezing cold, and we had no idea where she came from," she shared with Good Morning America (@goodmorningamerica on Instagram). Later, the rescue team carried out vigorous search operations in flooded riverbanks but couldn't find the beaver's lodge. "I used to work full-time at a company while also doing this work. Actually, the day I got Bo, I said, 'Hey, I quit,'" Broz shared, talking about how she resigned from her full-time job after finding the baby beaver.

One thing, in particular, that made her fall head-over-heels for beavers was the sound they made. "It just pulled on something intrinsic in me; she sounds just like a human baby, like a newborn. I had a connection with her, but I was always ready to return her to the wild. Like, I was really looking forward to the day when I would see her go and be a wild beaver," Broz shared with the outlet. Further, she went on to explain why beavers are excellent for the environment. She shared that these creatures create wetlands, providing homes to thousands of other species. Not only that, but beavers also help in improving the water quality and overall biodiversity.

"She was the first baby beaver we got a call about. She was so fragile, and her little umbilical cord was still on her belly. And she had a lot of different GI (gastrointestinal) issues. So finally, when she got stable, we ended up getting a call about a second baby beaver," Broz recalled. This time, the rescue team named the second baby beaver "Arrow." Everything was going smoothly until they realized something was wrong with Arrow. She developed some respiratory issues.

One fine day, the team saw Bo's eyes getting cloudy, and within a day, Arrow had similar symptoms. "It turns out that Arrow had been carrying this mystery disease," Broz said. While Arrow recovered, Bo eventually lost one of her eyes. The team decided not to release Bo back into the wild because, firstly, she was blind and, secondly, she had an infection that could spread. At present, Broz and Bo share an amazing bond and are quite inseparable. "She is very gentle in the way that she handles me. She knows that my skin is not as tough as hers," the woman revealed.

Reacting to the Instagram reel, @nikkivonschticky commented, "Not going to lie, I genuinely never gave beavers too much thought… But now after this video? Bo & Arrow just took me to school. I had no idea how much they help our ecosystem! The cooing sounds they make! Proud new beaver advocate." Similarly, @__hautecocoachanel__, who was moved by the incredible story, wrote, "Why am I crying? I love animals SO MUCH. This is such an amazing story." @laurarinfr shared, "I have lived in New York my whole life and didn’t know that they were our state animal."
