State-by-state pet trends reveal the unique way each US State cares for its furry friends

A pet owner's relationship with their pet can determine how the said animals would behave in everyday life and also the kind of personality they would adopt. A recent study covers exactly this connection, showing that pets' behavior and well-being are heavily influenced by how their owners treat them.

A recent survey conducted by Banfield Pet Hospital and Talker Research has revealed fascinating insights into the pet ownership habits across the United States. With over 5,000 cat and dog owners surveyed, this research highlights the most adventurous, pampered, and well-traveled pets in the country. The survey aimed to uncover unique pet owner superlatives, from adventurous pets to those who shower their animals with love and attention.

When it comes to pets who love to explore, Alaska takes the lead. A staggering 62% of Alaskans reported that their pets always want to go on adventures. This is no surprise, considering the state's vast wilderness and outdoor lifestyle. Kansans also share a sense of adventure, with 26% of them reporting that their pets always get into a playful mood when outside. Alaska’s pet owners also stand out for their strong emotional connection with their animals. They were also found to be the most attached to their pets, followed by North Carolinians, where 56% of pet owners consider their pets to be their constant companions.

Some states also go above and beyond when it comes to their pets’ overall well-being. Kentuckians are the most likely to take their pets to the vet, with Alabama and Tennessee not far behind. Tennesseans, in particular, take pet care to another level, with many having more apps for their pet’s wellness than for their own. In Maryland, pets are treated like royalty. They are the most likely to be pampered, with 17% of Marylanders even organizing photoshoots with their furry companions. 35% brush their pet's fur daily and 32% follow their pets' bath routine to a T. Similarly, Massachusetts pet owners are known for celebrating their pets' birthdays, with 45% treating their pets to a birthday treat every year.

Alea Harrison, Chief Medical Officer of Banfield Pet Hospital, also shared, "One thing we know at Banfield is that while each pet owner has a unique approach, we all share a common passion and love for our pets." Some pets are truly world travelers. Louisiana pet owners are the most likely to travel with their pets, although Florida pets take the prize for the most well-traveled, having visited the most states. New York and Washington stand out for having the most international trips with their pets. Some pet owners prefer cozy time at home. Nevadans spend the most time with their pets, Connecticut is home to the cuddliest companions, and Indiana leads with the most laid-back furry friends.
