Watch the incredible moment a stray dog became the first to cross the new Romania-Hungary border

The first day of the New Year kicked off with a historic moment as Romania and Bulgaria officially became full members of the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025. This milestone removed land border restrictions between them and neighboring countries, including Hungary. But what made this landmark event even more special? Well, an adorable stray dog became the very first one to cross the newly opened Romania-Hungary border. The wholesome moment was shared by tinerețe coaie crețe (@coaiecrete) on Twitter and amazed over 8 million viewers online.

As the checkpoint barrier was lifted, a round of applause erupted from the uniformed border guards. In that instant, the dog with its tail wagging wildly, joyfully crossed the newly-inaugurated border— as captured perfectly in the now-popular video. The Twitter video received an amazing response on social media with people reacting to the heartfelt incident.
For instance, @subhamkr1012 commented, "It’s heartwarming to see a dog being the first to cross into Romania’s new Schengen Area, promoting free movement not just for humans but also for their pet across borders." Meanwhile, @singularityofal commented, "A dog crossing borders like a true crypto pioneer! woofing its way into history."@homskyra wrote, "Very symbolic. Before this event, they wouldn’t let even a dog enter the Schengen area without a visa. On a serious note, it would be amazing if we never had the concept of borders. Migrating to warmer countries for the winter and migrating to cooler countries for the summer." @maui_3_ wrote, "Romanians seeing a real Hungarian crossing the Border."
Similarly, @satendra__yadav wrote, "Romania finally joins the Schengen Area, and a dog was the first to cross the border now that's a paw-sitive start to new adventures a dog was the first to cross the border what a paw-some moment." @ravikumarrx wrote, "What a pawsome moment for Romania! A symbolic first step into the Schengen Area, led by man's best friend—truly heartwarming and memorable!"

On a related note, another TikTok video shared by a dog owner, KaleeMcGee (@kaleemcgee), went viral when she explained why her adopted pooch was ignoring her. In the hilarious clip, Kalee revealed that her adopted chihuahua did not even listen to the most basic commands and phrases. "This is hilarious and I have no one else to tell so please listen! We adopted a dog 2-3 weeks ago, a great little chihuahua from the shelter," the woman began as she shared that the dog seemed tamed even though they had no information on the little guy. Further, Kalee revealed that they were trying to let the dog listen to their commands, but the pup did not listen to them.

“We figured it out. He only speaks Spanish,” Kalee remarked, trying to control her laughter. “Our little chihuahua doesn’t know English,” she added. “He’s been looking at us like, ‘What are you talking about!?’” the woman shared. She was too astonished to explain the humor behind the situation and hence decided to demonstrate. Kalee called her chihuahua Max and first said in English, "Max come,” but the dog just stared at her. “Max aqui,” the woman said in Spanish and the canine immediately came towards her. Next, Kalee asked Max to “sit,” but the dog did not listen. “Max sientate,” she said in Spanish, and Max, within a blink of an eye, sat down.
@kaleemcgee If you judge my laugh that's rude. if you judge my Spanish that's fair. #BetterTogetherChallenge #VansCheckerboardDay #fyp #fypシ #fy #dog #spanish ♬ original sound - KaleeMcGee
