Dogs always seem to know something humans don’t. There are several personal stories shared by pet owners when their dogs have sniffed out fishy situations before they ever realized. A viral Reddit post under u/FeetsMe turned into a one-stop for heartwarming stories of pets saving their owners’ lives with their small but significant warnings. A fellow pet owner, who goes by u/khushnand on the platform, took the opportunity to retell their late dog’s intuitive move that saved the day.

“My wife was walking our previous dog, and had locked up the apartment because no one was at home,” they wrote. After walking half a mile, the dog suddenly began acting strangely. He tried to pull her back to their home for no apparent reason. The wife did not realize what was going on until the duo reached her home to find out there was a fire. “There was fire, and some people were [sic] trying to break the [sic] door to get in and help douse it,” the dog owner recalled of the stressful situation.

The family was indebted to their late dog for alerting them to the fire despite being at a distance. “Because of him, we only lost a bit of furniture, but I just wonder if he had not pulled her back, what might have happened!” The family thanked their lucky stars and their pet dog for his life-saving act. This was one of the many pet stories shared under the viral Reddit post that encouraged owners to reveal warnings from their dogs in the past. The user of the original post was a dog parent to a German Shepherd who was reportedly not as affectionate or clingy. However, the pup started sniffing their outer thigh near the glutes, all of a sudden, a year ago, and the owner has not been able to guess why.

“I thought maybe he was just getting old and just decided to interact with us more than he usually does. A couple of [sic] months went by, and almost every day he's sniffing the same exact spot,” the post added. Later, the owner got another pup, a Jack Russell, who was rehomed and began acting similarly. “I feel completely fine, but I now believe something is there. It's a little worrying that both dogs sniff the exact same spot and won't stop until I move them or myself.” While the dog owner was concerned, they claimed their husband believes it’s nothing to worry about. Nevertheless, the owner had faith in their dogs and had already set up a medical appointment. The poster did not provide any updates later on.

There are many things dogs can sense; danger and illness are some of them. According to PetMD, pets utilize their power of smell to detect metabolic changes in human breath and skin. Their changed behaviors around their owners are often viewed as a warning and alert them about the issue. Similarly, dogs can also detect cancer and pregnancy. Additionally, a dog can sense weather changes by using environmental cues relating to smell and intensity of light, allowing them to sense potential danger
