Cops stunned after woman walks into stranger’s yard to ‘sunbathe’ — then steals his prized hunting dog in a bizarre 'grand-theft' scheme

The dogs were valuable, cared for, and raised with love, with owners investing heavily in them from puppyhood.

The quiet morning near Carrabelle took an odd turn when an unfamiliar woman wandered into a stranger’s yard. She said she was only looking for a place to "sunbathe," dressed in a simple T-shirt, joggers, and Crocs, and moving between the trees with no concern that she was on private land. That harmless claim had turned into the start of a case that stunned Franklin County. What looked like a strange moment soon led to a far bigger problem, as the property owner would discover that his prized hunting dogs were missing and that the visitor was not there for rest at all.

As reported by My Pan Handle on Thursday, November 27, 2025, the trouble reached its peak when Tanner Moses, owner of ten Walker Hound deer hunting dogs, noticed a vehicle parked close to his property. He asked the driver, 35-year-old Mia Jasa, “Hey, have you been on my property?” to which she replied with a simple, “No.” But once Moses walked back, he saw every kennel door open and all his dogs gone. The group included four puppies, a pregnant female, and five adult dogs. Moses immediately contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s officials to report the theft. Sheriff A.J. Smith later stressed how important the animals were, saying, “These dogs are, one, they are very expensive dogs. The hunters and the people who own them put a lot of money into them, a lot of care. And some of them are, you know, raised from puppies. And they have a lot of sentimental value.” Deputies soon learned Jasa had traveled from Clearwater and had no ties to the area.

Deputies believe Jasa stepped out of the woods and let the animals loose before placing at least one in her vehicle, which is why she is now charged with "grand theft." Witnesses also reported seeing the pregnant dog inside her car and another hiding under it. Eight of the dogs were eventually recovered, but two moved onto Highway 98 and were unfortunately struck by passing vehicles. Moses expressed his grief over the passing of his two canines, “It’s tough. I mean, to see dogs that I’ve raised from the day that they were born get killed. I mean, it’s tough. I’ve got two sons, and they’re out here feeding dogs with me and petting dogs. I mean, me and my oldest son had to bury two.”

Sheriff A.J. Smith said they still do not know why Jasa acted this way, calling it “a pretty bizarre story” since she had “no affiliation with Franklin County” and may have just driven through and decided to release the dogs. He noted that investigators cannot yet tell whether her actions were planned or sudden. "She was driving through here, whether she was intentionally looking for dogs to release or just happened to come through and decided she would do it, we don’t really know." Jasa was arrested by the deputies on November 19, 2025, and later released from jail on a $250 bond. Moses said he hopes prosecutors take the matter to the fullest extent.
