Entitled lady schemed to steal this man’s dog for her kids — but his quick-witted response ended her plan on the spot

A dog owner once had a close call with an entitled lady trying to steal his beautiful dog in broad daylight. But his clever response to her gave him some leeway to de-escalate the crisis and save his dog from her claws. The man narrated the ordeal in an elaborate post under u/manatarms1989 on Reddit and received over 1,400 votes. The chilling story highlights how certain dog breeds are vulnerable to theft by opportunistic strangers or dog thieves.

When the dog owner was younger, he had a regular routine of visiting a popular ice-cream parlour from the 1930s in town with his dog, Sophie, a Blue Heeler. At 19, he would pick up his younger brother from school, and the three of them would enjoy some ice cream outdoors. Their father worked at a pharmacy nearby, and they had followed this routine for years, ever since Sophie was a puppy.

One day, the owner tied Sophie to an outdoor table and went inside to order food when one of the servers alarmed him to a terrifying sight. A lady was trying to grab Sophie. “I dropped what I was doing, turned around, and saw this heavyset lady trying to corral Sophie around the table, with one hand on her leash, and the other hand trying to grab her collar,” the post read. The owner recalled that people were always interested in his pooch, considering how beautiful she was. When he confronted her, the woman blatantly admitted that she was trying to take the dog home.

"You obviously don't care for the poor thing if you're leaving it tied out here in the sun; you don't deserve this sweet little thing,” the thief tried to defend herself. The owner, losing his cool, warned her to get away from Sophie, threatening to call the police. The lady barely gave up and demanded to take the dog. “You don't deserve such a beautiful dog. I want her for my kids to play with." Sophie ran behind her owner's legs for safety. So, he lied about Sophie’s behavior to scare her away.

“‘That's a terrible idea!’ I started having an idea on how to get out of this situation, ‘This breed is notorious for being bad with kids!’ he responded. Although Sophie was friendly to children because of her Australian Shepherd genes, he figured the lady would not know. However, he was shocked by what she said next. "What are you talking about? She's been so friendly every time you're down here,” the lady claimed. The dog owner now realized that the woman had been plotting to steal his pup, observing their routine for weeks. In a desperate attempt, the owner once again bluffed that Sophie belonged to the heeler breed, known for biting at the heels of humans and animals.

The store owner intervened to get rid of the entitled lady. She even tried to claim that the man had stolen her dog. But the store owner defended him as a regular who had been visiting the place since Sophie was a puppy. The woman left while hurling a half-threat at the dog owner, saying it was far from over. Eventually, the woman left town after every store began treating her with indifference.
