Mom's overstepping cost 11-year-old a chance to pet his favorite cat, and the internet's not happy

A recent post on Reddit caught the attention of numerous users on the internet, pushing everyone into debating whether a certain cat's owner had crossed a line. The post was uploaded by u/Jforn2345, who shared a few run-ins she had with a mother and son duo when she stepped out to take a stroll along her college campus. The 21-year-old female narrates the story of how she recently adopted a 5-month-old cat, noting that the little feline is extremely sociable, considering she was raised in college.
The owner goes on about how she had been bumping into a mother with her 11-year-old son, who seemed to be outside whenever she would take her cat out for a walk on the campus grounds. She states that it is an open-access campus, due to which many families can be seen walking around leisurely — which is something she finds sweet as well. One day, the mother asked if her son could pet the owner's cat, to which she responded with an immediate 'yes'. "It’s all going good," the owner writes, "but she takes the kitten out of my hands without asking to give it to her son, which was a bit annoying. The kid is gentle with my kitten, so I’m okay with it. But the mom is saying kind of weird things like 'this cat loves you' and 'poor cat having to live in a dorm.'" And that's when all hell broke loose.

The owner was heavily irritated by these comments, but didn't let it show on her face. She shares in the post how well she maintains her cat, "like Ma’am, this cat has a three-tier pink castle, unlimited pets, and homemade cat toys, don’t you worry about her." The owner went on to share how she saw the duo again after a week, and the mother once again requested if her son could pet the cat. But this time, owner is shocked as she "offers to buy my kitten because it deserves more space and to be an outdoor cat." This offer immediately offends the owner, and she is appalled that the mother kept looking down on her.

The owner shares, "I love my cat and think I give her a great life, I’m always on time with vet appointments and am a very responsible pet owner." This was the moment she decided to draw a line, so the next time she was approached by the mother and asked if her son could pet the kitten, the owner said a firm 'no' and walked away. However, looking at the innocent child's face and how upset he was, the owner was caught in a dilemma about whether her actions were justified since the boy "didn’t do anything wrong." She states, "I felt bad, but I was really uncomfortable."

Numerous users instantly came to the comment section to share their opinion on the matter. u/Krajun wrote, "All of my outdoor cats had premature deaths, needless to say, my current babies have never been outside and I won't allow it anymore." u/Different-Peak-8821 commented, "I feel bad for the boy cause its not his fault, but its your cat and nothing you did should have indicated that the cat was not well looked after. The lady was just rude and thought she could buy a nice, well-behaved, and likely already litter-trained cat for cheap." u/saucynoodlelover exclaimed, "This. It's not about the kid (who sounds very polite), the mom is the one being a problem." u/That_Contribution720 commented, "They can get their own cat."
