'It was incredibly sweet and moving—and pretty convincing that he knew exactly who was in there,' the owner said.

Dogs are observant animals, sensing changes in their owners. A 37-year-old Swedish woman, mother of three, likes to call herself a mother of four, proudly including her seven-year-old Labrador, Elvis. In a video shared under the handle @elvisbatzthelab, the dog’s adorable response to his pregnant owner's question, “Where’s the baby?” shows just how smart pups can be.

Mikaela Bätz always had fond memories growing up with dogs, so when she and her husband Tobias bought their first house together, they immediately adopted a black Labrador, whom they named Elvis. The enthusiastic pet is described as someone who loves everything, from swimming and games of fetch to long walks. But above all, he loves his family.

One of the fondest memories Mikaela has of Elvis’s awareness of her pregnancy began when she was expecting her son, Ted. The couple already had their daughter, Mira, 15, when Elvis was adopted. However, he was able to witness the arrival of brother Ted, 6, and Lilly, who is a few months old. Elvis began his “booping” habit, a way of showing that he knew she was pregnant.

Speaking to Newsweek, Mikaela recalls, “The booping actually started when I was pregnant with Ted. Elvis loved resting his head on or near my belly. I used to tell him, ‘There’s a baby in there,’ because I always speak to Elvis like he’s one of my children. Eventually, I could just ask, ‘Where’s the baby?’ and he would gently boop my belly with his nose.”

Mikaela reveals that among her three children, Elvis shares a special bond with her youngest daughter, Lilly. “It was incredibly sweet and moving—and pretty convincing that he knew exactly who was in there. Even now, if I ask, 'Where's the baby?' he'll boop Lilly.” She continues, "With Lilly, he’s very attentive. He often lies next to her, always stays by my chair when I’m breastfeeding, and if she cries because of tummy pain, he comes running. But if she’s just mad or loud—he doesn't bother, haha. He can tell the difference."

According to the American Kennel Club, a 2024 report revealed that dogs have about 60 times more scent receptors than humans and a large part of their brain devoted to smell. Because of this, experts believe dogs can pick up scent changes caused by the hormonal shifts in pregnancy.

@elvisbatzthelab Did I know baby Lilly was in mom’s belly? She says 100% yes 🩷 Just like when she had baby Ted in there, I felt it then too 🥹❤️ #dogs #baby #kidswithdogs #labrador #dogsoftiktok ♬ Sweet Heat Lightning - Gregory Alan Isakov

The "booping" gesture in the video took everyone by surprise and drew heartwarming responses from internet users. @semmiecatharina wrote, "He gave the baby a 'boop.'" @pr3ttyzxn wrote, "That’s a really good command. If anything ever happens, ‘Where’s the baby?’ she might not know, but she’ll figure it out, that’s for sure 🤟🏼" @dr.monica_do penned her personal experience, "Oh my gosh, what a good boy! My German Shepherd seems to be clueless, I’m pregnant, or just doesn’t care."
