She found it odd that out of the three bathrooms in the house, only hers was getting raided.

Dogs often pick up strange behaviors out of nowhere and torment their owners with them. When her pet dog began a peculiar habit of shredding toilet paper only in her bathroom, a pet owner was left annoyed and confused. The pup would leave behind a huge mess and often trails of paper leading into the woman’s room. She did her best to find out what was wrong with her pet until it dawned on her months later. In a Reddit post under u/Straight_Bat_1046, the pet owner explained how the series of events shaped up into one big discovery.

A few months ago, the dog started sneaking into the owner’s bathroom and taking out all the toilet paper from the trash can. He even left trails of it in her bedroom and bathroom. “It was a very odd and new behavior that we were so mad about, at the time,” the post read. When she tried to investigate the reason behind it, she was bogged down by unenlightening answers like the dog wanted attention or was bored. “But I always thought it was weird that out of the three bathrooms we have around the house, mine was the only one being messed with,” she wrote. Eventually, she discovered the answer, and all her frustration was gone.

The pet owner realized that her dog had long known she was pregnant before she even tried a pregnancy test. “I found out I was pregnant about eight weeks into my pregnancy, to preface, I’m now 18 weeks,” the woman wrote in the post shared eight months ago. The owner’s family used a certain kind of “flushable” toilet paper, whereas the trash can only contained toilet paper used for urine. It is known that the hormones released during pregnancy emanate a strong smell that pets can detect. "Read somewhere that dogs can smell the HCG hormone, so I bet he was like, 'Hmm, what’s this mom?'”

Nevertheless, the woman had to find a temporary fix to stop her dog from shredding toilet paper all over the house. She left their squatty potty in front of the trash can as an obstruction for the dog, and the problem was solved. Fellow pet owners were sharing similar experiences under the post. “He has always liked to curl up next to us on the couch, but since I got pregnant, it’s like he has to be on me. He will sometimes lie [sic] down on top of me. He’s a stage five clinger now for sure,” shared u/PangolinDear965.

Likewise, u/Daftcow6969 said, “My dog kept getting protective of my stomach when he never did before. I was like, ‘Huh, weird.’ Two days later, I got a positive test.” u/rowdybeanjuice recounted, "My non-cuddly cat started consistently lying [sic] on my stomach and purring." Rachel Barrack, DVM, a certified veterinary acupuncturist in New York City, said that dogs are extremely sensitive to smell and most of their brain is used to detecting and processing scents in their environment, per The Bump. Hence, they can sniff out bombs, cancer, and hormonal changes in humans.
