A dog owner felt indebted to her pet dog for saving her life after he kept blocking her way to delay her commute. A Reddit user (u/meanttosay) shared a touching story about a Rottweiler she once owned under a thankful post for dogs shared by u/Sunnydaywithdogs. The woman recounted her former pet acting strangely one particular morning before she headed out for her daily commute. She believes it was a blessing in disguise, as her dog sensed danger long before she even realized it.

Marking her pet as a “big, gentle giant,” the dog owner reminisced about the day he saved her life. One morning, she was surprised to find her pet blocking every path as she prepared to get ready for work. “I swung my feet over to slide into my slippers, and he was sitting on them. Huh? I coax him to move, he blocked my exit from the bedroom,” the Reddit user wrote. This continued in every corner of the house. He followed her in and out of the bathroom, the kitchen, while making coffee, blocking her every step until she was finally out of her house.

The woman was baffled but continued on her commute, which took about an hour every day. She had been doing this for a while, so she had no qualms about the road. She changed lanes at a regular point and was shocked by the sight. “At this exact spot, which for years I had changed lanes, there was an accident,” she continued. “An accident so fresh and new, there was no slowdown or back-ups. I just stared as I carefully drove past.” The dog owner was unnerved by the scene but felt a deep gratitude for her pet dog. She revealed that her Rottweiler never sat on her slippers ever again, which the owner believes was a sign that the dog was protecting her.

This was one of the many heartwarming stories pet owners shared in the thread. The original poster recollected an emotional moment when her dogs supported her during times of crisis. The pet owner was dealing with pregnancy loss and infertility and found herself at the lowest point of her life. “But every time, even when I’m at my lowest, they sit on my lap and lick my face. They never leave my side even if I’m too sad to acknowledge [sic] them,” the post read. She marveled at her dogs’ forgiving and understanding nature, regardless of the reason behind it.

Another dog owner (u/EggSpecial5748) shared how her Ollie saved them from a “life of never-ending sadness” following her son’s death. They struggled to find joy, but her pet dog changed that for her. “I’m forever in his debt,” the owner confessed. Scientists believe that dogs are susceptible to emotional contagion, like toddlers, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. While there is ample anecdotal evidence that dogs do understand their owners’ emotions, there is no scientific explanation for that.
