Senior dog found floating in canal on a shopping cart gets the one thing she's waited her whole life for

Countless stories about owners abandoning their pets have raised serious questions about the level of kindness and humanity in the world today. It's heartbreaking to see so many people discarding their pets — the ones whom they promised to cherish and love forever. However, some unsung heroes relentlessly work 24/7, for these innocent animals who are left to face the cruel world alone. Arizona Humane Society (AHS) is one such rescue center that aims to prevent animal cruelty and neglect. In one of their rescue missions, they found a senior dog floating on a shopping cart in a canal, alone and terrified. Thankfully, the welfare organization rescued the puppy on time, finally showing her the kindness she was always deserving of.

The senior dog, later named Dorothea, was found floating in a canal in Phoenix when someone spotted her and contacted the humane society, as reported by PEOPLE, where an AHS emergency animal technician alongside the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the call. Soon after, a daring rescue mission was launched, befitting the urgent and time-sensitive matter. A video posted on Breitbart News' (@breitbartnews92) YouTube channel captured Dorothea lying on top of a discarded shopping cart, seemingly defeated as if she had lost hope of survival. The kind rescuers skillfully attached an animal control pole to Dorothea's shopping cart-turned-makeshift-boat, slowly pulling her toward the shore.
"Using a ladder and various AHS rescue devices to get her up to safety, the sweet senior pup was all tail wags when she was finally ashore," AHS said. After the 10-year-old Chihuahua mix was rescued, the team rushed her to AHS's Pet Ambulance for immediate medical attention. Dorothea was scared, but showed little signs of it, being cooperative instead, perhaps because she could sense that the team was trying to help her and meant no harm. After a quick medical examination found her to be extremely dehydrated and hungry, Dorothea was shifted to AHS's Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital for more tests, where she also received care for some minor injuries and fractured teeth.
"Although it is unknown how long or why she was there in the canal, Dorothea's incredible story highlights the lifesaving work that the Arizona Humane Society is able to accomplish as it cares for almost 22,000 pets each year," AHS shared. Moreover, the shelter home revealed that Dorothea was an adorable and friendly dog who loved nothing more than cuddles and attention from good people. Perhaps, it was because of her beautiful nature that she quickly found her forever home in Youngtown, Arizona, where she now plays gleefully under the watchful care of her new owners.

Meanwhile, reacting to the rescue mission, @jonathanschadenfreude9603 commented, "Unholiest of curses brought on anyone who would give up on a dog. NEVER GIVE UP ON A DOG!" Similarly, @rj3969 wrote, "I wish I could rescue dogs all day. Thank you!" On the other hand, @kellymurdock-nh7pu said, "An elderly person's dog, probably. Hope she finds her family!"
In another similar story, an individual who goes by u/freeagent291 on Reddit shared how they found a dog abandoned by its previous owners with a heartwrenching note. The letter not only had details about Bella, the dog's nature, eating habits, etc. but also reflected the owner's self-realization of their incapability, as it read, "My former owner was invalid and could not take me for walks." Although the author who shared the story was in no position to keep Bella, they definitely helped her find a more secure home.
