Woman tells her boyfriend to ask her dog’s permission to marry her – his adorable response seals the deal

Love stories often touch our hearts, but when they involve dogs, they somehow feel even more special. A recently resurfaced video reminded many people of the strong bond between humans and their pets, and how these companions often play a central role in our most meaningful moments. As reported by PEOPLE, a TikTok video of a man asking for a very unusual form of permission to propose has captured hearts again. First posted in November 2021 by Alex Hazen, who goes by the handle @alexandracolleen, the clip has over 6 million views. With its 2024 repost, the video has racked up another 640.2K views, reigniting its viral momentum. 

The sweet moment took place at Lookout Mountain Park in Colorado on November 9, 2021, when Matt Hazen got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, Alex. Before doing so, he turned to the most important “person” in her life, her six-month-old golden retriever, Gus. In the viral video, Matt is seen saying, "I'm gonna ask momma to marry me, is that okay?" Gus quickly responds with a happy bark. Matt then says, "Oh, you like that idea? Okay, let's shake on it then," and they seal the moment with a paw shake.

Viewers loved the adorable gesture. One TikTok user, @enzounleashed joked, “He said, 'What are your intentions with my momma?'" @carolzlife commented, "I literally thought this was an audio from the movie, 'Marley and Me.' How cute!" While @urlocalnugget8 shared, "This was the most important approval needed before you have proposed."

Alex later told the outlet, "I had joked that Matt better ask Gus’ permission before proposing. We always talk in his voice and narrate his thoughts, so we say the silliest things to each other. Matt remembered that I had said that and thought it was a sweet idea that I would be able to watch after the proposal. It meant so much that he remembered a silly little joke I made in passing." She added that she still tears up when watching the video, calling it a detail that meant the world to her.

Matt and Alex, who first met in 2014 through mutual friends, got married on November 7, 2023, in Charleston, South Carolina. Though Gus, now 3 years old, wasn’t at the wedding, he was still part of their special day and was mentioned lovingly in both of their vows. In her vow, Alex said, "I'll tell them (future grandkids) about the night we met, our first house, our first dog, the beautiful life we've built together."

On July 4, Emily Ward and her partner, Jacob Oxlade, went for a quiet sunset walk at Horseshoe Bay in Brisbane. Unknown to Emily, Jacob had planned a surprise proposal. As he popped the question, their dog, Murphy, wearing a GoPro, captured the entire moment. The most adorable part? Murphy got the zoomies right after and dashed around in excitement, adding fun to the emotional scene. Emily called it "perfect" and said she would treasure the memory forever. "I couldn't have imagined anything more special,” she shared, touched by the fact that her fiancé knew her so well and included their beloved dog in such a meaningful way.
