Cops rescued two kittens from an abandoned car hoping for a ‘happy ending’ – but their new owner’s heartfelt twist was even better than they imagined

Two abandoned kittens were recently rescued from an old car in Sparkhill, Birmingham, leaving local officers with a story that quickly became far more special than anyone expected. What began as a routine call quickly turned into a moment that surprised them with each detail that followed. And just when the officers thought the rescue had reached its sweetest point, the new owner later added a gentle twist of their own. 

As reported by West Midlands Police on Monday, December 1, 2025, neighborhood officers PC Martin Knott and PC Jacob Knott found the kittens inside a vehicle that had been reported abandoned. With no tax on the vehicle, it was recovered by the authorities. The kittens were later taken to a vet for proper check-ups and to see if they had identification chips. With no chips found, but both kittens in good health, they were then brought back to Moseley police station. Officers there spent time caring for them before the team joined efforts to find a permanent home for the little felines. 

Soon, a friend of an officer offered to rehome the pair, and the kittens, one male and one female, were later named Martin and Courtney after PC Martin Knott and PC Courtney Reynolds from the neighbourhood team. PC Knott explained that it had been “such a surprise to see the two kittens in the vehicle,” and the officers immediately felt they “had to ensure their story had a happy ending.” He added that they are extremely "delighted" by the sweet gesture of the friend of the officer who "jumped at the chance to rehome them."

Police officers have long stepped in to help animals in need, whether abandoned, lost, or even stolen. In another recent incident, a family in northern Colorado faced weeks of worry when their 5-month-old puppy, Bluey, was found missing from their home. Local officers carefully followed clues, reviewing surveillance footage and tracking a suspect before discovering an abandoned truck linked to the case. Officer Alyssa Bird, with help from Eaton Police, located the suspect’s home on November 13, 2025, and safely recovered Bluey. The family was overjoyed to be reunited with their puppy, who had been unharmed throughout the ordeal. Bird described the reunion as unforgettable, sharing that the family’s children were “crying when they saw their puppy home safe again,” ending a stressful three-week search with joy.

Not every call that police respond to is serious; sometimes a routine alert can turn into a funny surprise for the officers. In a recent incident, Derbyshire officers got several reports of an abandoned puppy, but their visit quickly turned into a moment of laughter when they found something entirely unexpected. Police were told a “small dog” had been left tied at the top of Slack Hill on Chesterfield Road near Matlock. Concerned, officers rushed to the scene, only to find a toy of Sven from the Disney film "Frozen" instead of a real dog. Surprised but amused, the officers shared the incident on social media, joking that they had found “Santa’s reindeer” taking a break.
