A thief barged into a garage to steal a bike but was caught red-handed by the house guard dog. It was unlike any other encounter as a golden furball rushed out of the house and jumped on the thief, wagging its tail. A viral clip shared by Global News on YouTube showcased the “coolest dog ever” becoming a hindrance to the thief, not to alert its owner, but because the lonely dog wanted to enjoy some playtime with the culprit. The post amassed 45,000 views and a range of opinions shared in the comments. While some internet users laughed at the affectionate dog, others seemed concerned about the thief’s lack of self-awareness.

The incident unfolded at a residential home in San Diego, where the owner had inadvertently left the garage door wide open. The sight of an open garage full of tools and a bike lured in the thief. As he was walking out with the bike, a golden retriever hurried out wanting to play with him. Surprisingly, the thief put the bike on a stand and spared a moment to give the pup some belly rubs. “Because you’re the coolest dog I’ve ever known!” he could be heard saying in the footage. “I love you, too. You’re a sweetheart.” He even suggested the dog come home with him.

As a word of warning, the thief asked the pet dog about his owner and advised that the garage door should not be left open. He even proceeded to call the owner himself, raising doubts about his sanity. Following a blissful moment shared, the man continued his theft and casually strolled away with the bike as the adorable pet looked on. The hilarious encounter with the golden retriever was captured in CCTV footage. People joked about the dog’s innocence in the comments under the post. @ivorthomas468 mused, “New definition of a watchdog.” “This is why Goldens aren’t guard dogs,” quipped another user (@uffu2490). A third (@murugappanr143) chimed, “First play with me, then take whatever you want.”

However, a fair share of viewers noticed the thief’s unusual behavior. “Lacked total self-awareness and stayed there to pet the dog even while committing a crime,” said @Turboman-kx7cc. “Really oddly dressed for a thief, with a wide open garage door, and a hiking backpack,” pointed out @KaiTenSatsuma. “Just goes to show, even unlimited love cannot stop crime. It was close, though,” opined @AndyDrake-FOOKYT. There have been some discussions about golden retrievers being effective guard dogs.

Even though they are vocal and do a good enough job in alerting their families to strangers, their friendly and non-aggressive nature may take over, negating the whole purpose of it, according to a report by Golden Meadows Retrievers. Nevertheless, if trained properly, this breed can make great security dogs stemming from their loyalty towards owners and alerting skills. In general, the German Shepherd and Doberman Pinscher breeds are the go-to choices for people looking for guard dogs, per HowStuffWorks. The former is a staple in police forces and the military, while Dobermans are known for their powerful instincts.
