90% of pet owners are not aware of this devastating truth about their pets.

Pets are immensely loyal to their human owners throughout their lives. When the time comes to bid a final goodbye, all they expect is for their favorite person in the world to be beside them. Unfortunately, most pets are not lucky enough to spend their final moments with their owner. Not because they are not allowed to, but because most pet owners choose to look away during the difficult time. When a pet owner asked her vet about the “hardest part” of his job, his eye-opening answer shifted something within. She felt it was too precious a message not to be shared with the world and penned a heartfelt note on her now-deleted X page @jessi_dietrich.

Jessi Dietrich, a pet owner and regular veterinary patron, asked her cat’s vet the difficult question, but was probably not prepared for his wholehearted reply. In the tweet, she wrote, “Asked my vet what the hardest part was about his job and he said when he has to put an animal down. 90 percent of owners don’t actually want to be in the room when he injects them,” she continued. “So the animal’s last moments are usually them frantically looking around for their owners, and to be honest, that broke me,” as reported by Newsner. Dietrich was reportedly left heartbroken by the vet’s response and shared the message with everyone.

Deeply affected by the insight, an employee of the Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital echoed the message in an elaborate note on social media, per the report. On Facebook, the person shared, “When you have to take your pet to the vet’s office for a humane pain-free ending, I want you all to know something. You have been the center of their world for their entire lives!” The employee requested pet owners to never leave their pawed pals behind as they “transition from life to death in a room full of strangers.” The animals are said to desperately search for their owner in every face in the room while the vet struggles to comfort the pet.

Though the original post was removed, the word had already rippled across the internet. Several other people with a significant social media presence reshared Jessi’s message, like @meanhawaii with 414,000 followers on Instagram. According to Blue Cross, a veterinary organization, the choice depends entirely on the pet owner to stay beside their dog up until their euthanization.

However, it is recommended that owners stay back to comfort their pet in their end moments of life and make a compromise to witness the difficult situation. Putting down your beloved pet is a big decision, and owners must take enough time to think it through. Pet owners may take some time off to process the situation and consult with a vet to choose the right time and place for the euthanasia. The process is usually carried out by injecting an overdose of anaesthetic into the vein of the front leg. It is painless, and the drug takes effect within seconds, per the report.
