Woman quit her job after boss made a cruel comment about her late dog — despite getting a huge raise

A woman made an uncompromising decision to quit her job because one of her bosses made a cruel remark about her dying dog. TikTok creator, Macy, who goes by @marissadeanne, narrated the series of events that pushed her to leave her office job at a law firm. After working at the firm for three years, she felt it was the right time to ask for a big raise from the attorneys. While she did bag that raise, Macy could not wait to leave the job months later because of her boss, who was inconsiderate of her pet dog.

It all began with a stellar annual review that Macy received from her peers. Realizing how underpaid her work was, she decided to ask for a raise with her “perfect review” in the backdrop. The dog owner was happy that her law firm had provided “most” of the raise she had asked for. Her joy was short-lived, though. The next day, she was called up to “Miss Rachel’s office” for a meeting about her raise. There seemed to be a misunderstanding between Macy and her boss, as the latter was irked about not being informed about the raise beforehand. As Macy sat there wondering where she went wrong, Ms. Rachel advised her against asking for big raises in the future.

Macy understood her boss’s concerns but was not prepared for what came next. “Rachel had the nerve to say, and I quote, ‘...When your dog was dying and we let you work from home.’...Most companies don’t even consider your dog dying as family,” the dog owner recalled. Shocked by the mention of her dying dog, who was still in recovery at home, Macy did not appreciate the comment and decided to eventually quit the law firm despite her good reviews. She planned to stay until after the holidays for the good bonuses and then put in her resignation by March.

When she gave her two-week notice, Ms. Rachel tried to persuade her to stay. Macy did not hold back from calling out her insensitive remark about her ailing pet. “That wasn’t the main reason, but that was the biggest reason why I quit,” the owner concluded. Macy’s pet dog passed away due to a heart condition last year. She was able to spend some more time with him soon after she quit her job. People cheered her on in the comments for making the right decision.

“Proud of you. Always advocate for yourself. Ask for the raise. Stay where you are valued,” wrote @livvyviciouss, and @udontknowme787 shared a similar anecdote, “Those types [sic] of supervisors are just toxic. I had a boss ask for a picture of my dead grandma in the coffin, as proof she died. I left and never looked back.” Pets have become an important part of families today. Losing them can be as devastating as losing a human counterpart. Therefore, offering pet bereavement leave and extending pet-friendly policies are necessary for employee retention, per WorkLife.
